Oh, the Lies

"Breast is best," and I truly believe that for so many reasons. One of the "reasons" why BF is considered better is that it's "free," no formula to buy. However, BFing is far from free, at least if you want all the convenient factors of BFing. Here's a list of items I've bought, along with some items that could be purchased, to make BFing go smoother.

Bottles, nipples, caps, brushes, etc. (needed whether formula feeding or BFing, unless you never plan to leave DC's side)
Bottle warmer (I got tired of heating water in the microwave)
Pump
Breast Shields (the ones with the pump were too small)
Storage bags
Lactation Consultant
La Leche League membership
Nipple Shield
Lanolin (although supposedly breast milk is just as good for healing)
Nursing bras - both day and sleep
Boppy
Boppy covers
Baby sling
Bra pads - disposable or reusable
Nursing shirts (not a necessity, but, they're out there)
Nursing pjs (again, available)

Granted, once you buy some of these one-time purchases, it may not add up to the cost of formula, and many are more luxuries or individual specific than necessities, but in the end there is a cost to BFing, at least in our society, and definitely in my world.
