When DH and I first moved into our apartment we agreed to keep Cheshire out of the bedroom (I was worried about cat hair everywhere and my allergies), so we provided him with his own space for all his stuff (no cat toys all over the place for us) and so we wouldn't have to worry about him breaking our stuff while we slept or were not home. At the apartment he originally had the guest bath and part of the office, then was reduced to just the guest bath, but it worked fine for him. When we moved into our house this step was even more crucial as our alarm has internal motion sensors, so we made a spare room into his room, which was much larger than his previous one, and had a window. He would sit on the sill and watch us mow the lawn - it was very cute. When we turned his room into the nursery we converted an "anteroom" into his new room by adding a gate. Anyway, whenever we are about to go to bed or leave the house we make sure that he is "in bed,” or more commonly, "put away," or "put up." Unfortunately, when putting DD in her crib, we now use those less, shall we say human, phrases. Granted, all Homo sapiens are considered animals, but my child is not a pet. We really need to break this habit. At least I have yet to refer to her as "it" since she's been born, unlike DH.
