DH has teased me during my pregnancy about not wanting a baby after all, but it was all in fun. Then last night he came and sat next to me on the couch, cuddled close, and admitted he's scared. The funny thing, to me, is he's scared not about having to care for another life, or the birth, or whether or not he'll be a good father (although he is a bit scared he won't do enough to help me, the dear). Instead he's scared because we are no longer going to be just two people, but now three. Gone will be the days of sitting in front of the TV watching DVDs from the time we get home from work until the time we go to sleep. Gone will be the days we "pop over" to his parents house for homework, dinner, shopping, whatever. Gone will be the days we decide to go out to eat, possibly in Dallas since we're in the area, rather than make our way home. (Many of these I'm adding to his "fears"). In the past we'd go from work to the grocery store, maybe with a stop somewhere for dinner first. Now we'll have to stop at home, day care, wherever, and get bambino before doing anything else unless we've prearranged a "date night" and bambino has a sitter/extended care. DH is scared that it will never be "just the two of us" again, despite the fact that one day this child will probably want to hang out with his/her friends, go off to college, and find a job out of city/state, whatever. All this came to him suddenly as he realized that, although not finished, the nursery is ready to receive a baby, out of the three fathers-to-be at his work one has recently become a father (he brought his daughter to work yesterday), and we have only about two more months before we'll just be waiting for contractions to start. Yes, no longer will I be pregnant, rather there will be a living, breathing human being we need to care for because it will be dependent upon us for its every need. Oh well - too late now, honey.
Addendum: Shortly after telling the family the news about bambino, we'd all peer down the baby aisle when we went grocery shopping, but DH said it was too early for any of that. About a week or so ago he went to Sam's Club with his family and came home with a large box of diapers, and then we went to Target and I bought a few more items without him complaining. Then this whole "fearful episode" occurred, and the next night we are grocery shopping and when he goes to find his family in the store he winds up going down the baby aisle instead. We even picked out a couple of pacifiers for bambino - and he's the one who was really reading the labels (ortho recommended, 0-6 mos, etc.). I gave him a hug and kiss along with one of those knowing looks that everything will be okay. Temporary insanity, perhaps? I know he's stressed about not getting as much time off work as he's like, school, conferences, and my job (we're getting a new executive director), but I know that he knows that everything will work out in the end, no matter how our lives may change.
