Another year has come and gone, and we believe this has been one of the most life-altering years of our lives. Well, actually, that will be arriving next year, but just preparing is enough. As most of you know by now, we are expecting our first child in March—(don’t worry, we’ll send birth announcements)—so we have been busy getting the house ready for the newest addition. Cheshire has a new room since his old one will be converted to the nursery, and when our new Ford Edge arrives, we will sadly no longer have his-and-her Mustangs.
My Grandfather R. passed away last December, and my Grandfather E. continues to have good days with bad, but the rest of the immediate family seems to be doing well. My grandparents are especially happy because they finally sold their Atlanta house in June, which meant we received a houseful of furniture and old knickknacks. At least the baby is set with toys (assuming they’re safe – how did we ever survive all of that lead?) and books. In March, I accepted a job with the brand new Old Red Museum of Dallas County History & Culture. It is a block away from The Sixth Floor Museum, so DH and I are able to carpool to work most days, which is great for the ever-tired mom-to-be.
While my official title is “Ticket Sales Manager/Assistant Gift Shop Manager,” I have been delegated tasks in membership, education (so, my new teacher certification is not going to waste), and public programs. In July, I celebrated my thirtieth birthday with family and friends at the Museum. Throughout the month I was able to continue the celebration with news of my pregnancy, and the releases of Harry Potter 5 in theaters and Harry Potter 7
in bookstores. Yes, I'm addicted. Even DH has read the last two books and looks forward to the release of the remaining movies.
DH continues to do well at The Sixth Floor, and he is also becoming more involved with education. He spoke to 29 school groups this year, and gave a popular series of monthly Museum gallery talks—attracting as many as 100 people each month. He also broke his previous oral history record of 60 new interviews—in 2007, he recorded a total of 76, including one-on-one videotaped sessions with General Chuck Yeager, actor Bill Paxton (Titanic, Twister), former NASA astronauts Captain Jim Lovell (Apollo 8, 13) and Colonel Walt Cunningham (Apollo 7), author and historian Michael Beschloss, Academy Award-nominated documentarian Robert Stone, and CSI: Miami star Rex Linn. Everyone who was alive in 1963 remembers where they were when President Kennedy was shot, and DH’s Oral History Project is preserving those unique stories for future generations. Over 520 have been recorded so far, with more on the way in 2008. DH is also continuing to earn his MA in Museum Studies through the University of Oklahoma, and was recently inducted as a graduate student into the Golden Key International Honor Society for maintaining his straight-A average. If all goes according to plan, DH should receive his MA by next December. Before that, however, he was scheduled to deliver history papers at three separate conferences next year—in Dallas, Corpus Christi, and Galveston, Texas, but fear of missing the birth of his first child caused him to cancel the one in Corpus.
DH's parents are keeping busy as ever with their Ident-A-Kid business (free ID cards for bambino later) and BIL, who was commended on his TAKS tests, a National Merit Honor student for his SAT scores, and passed all his AP exams. His band commitment is all that is keeping him from graduating valedictorian, but he a much more rounded student for it. In the meantime, BIL's science and accounting teachers are feuding over his future career.
In August, we enjoyed a “baby-moon” vacation with my grandparents on an Alaskan Cruise with a stop in Vancouver. Since we’re trying to save up for all the new items we’ll need, we have decided to skip all Disney theme park vacations for the foreseeable future, but that should make our first trip with our child that much more exciting.
